A Structure for Today

Shrewsbury High School was opened in 1885 and its reputation as the county’s premier day school remains as strong as ever. The building extends along the old town walls with gardens sweeping down the hill to the banks of the River Severn. We are privileged to occupy such a magnificent old building, but we are continually investing in better facilities. In 2005 we opened the Kingsland Centre, a £2 Million facility which includes a new sports hall and four additional classrooms.

The prep and pre-prep departments are just a short walk away, across the Kingsland Bridge.

Shrewsbury High School has the following structure:

  • Shrewsbury High School Senior Department. In the town centre on Town Walls, for girls from Year 7 to Year 13.
  • Shrewsbury High Prep. A day school for boys and girls from Year 4 (age 8) to Year 8 for boys, and Year 6 for girls. The prep features small class sizes, an extended school day, outstanding extra-curricular facilities and specialist teaching. Following completion of our new multi-million pound teaching block, the prep offers single-sex classes across the core curriculum. After Year 6 the girls can move up to the senior department and boys continue to Year 8 when they are prepared for the Common Entrance Examination at 13+.
  • Shrewsbury High Pre-Prep. A day school for boys and girls, the pre-prep offers a co-educational environment from Reception up to Year 3. There are close links between all parts of the school to ensure strong continuity of education throughout your child's time at the school.
  • Shrewsbury High School Montessori Nursery. Next door to the pre-prep is our Montessori Nursery for children from the age of 2. Using Montessori teaching methods and materials, our nursery gives your child outstanding early-years teaching and care. Open from 7:30am to 6pm, 50 weeks a year, we offer all the flexibility busy parents need.

How this came about

Shrewsbury High Prep has a structure unique in Shropshire. In 2007 Shrewsbury High School merged its Junior Department with Kingsland Grange Prep School, a renowned boys’ prep. By bringing together the best of both schools we now provide a friendly and welcoming environment where all children can develop into happy confident individuals.
